A recent study by DNV GL which drew on data from Reflex Marine and other sources will allow operators to make better informed choices between marine and aviation methods of transfer. The study is based on analysis of activity and incident data on transfers to offshore installations by vessel and crane. To build on this, further data gathering will be continued by the Marine Transfer Forum.
The Marine Transfer Forum has been formed to address the gap in reporting between aviation and marine methods. The forum brings together offshore operators, vessel operators, lifting specialists and manufacturers to share data, knowledge and best practice.
These results will be used to improve risk assessments and allow more objective comparisons to be made. Properly managed, marine transfer can be a safe and viable alternative to helicopters, particularly in favourable weather conditions.
